An Arcane Inheritance

When I am promised fantasy, magic, and especially dark academia, I don't expect to have full blown politics of the real world being thrown into my face quite like what was thrown into my face in the beginning of An Arcane Inheritance.... as a result, my brain found it really hard to wrap itself around what was actually going on in the novel, and I found a good bit of An Arcane Inheritance to be rather slow... even at times, too slow.
It took almost 200 pages, more so 300 for me before I felt like the story was anywhere near captivating enough to hold my attention, and even then, as someone who can be considered a person belonging to a minority to some degree... the repeated degradation of people not of color definitely did not help to keep my attention.
Also, another major problem I had is the fact that almost everyone is hinted at to be bi... or curious about the queer, and this felt forced and extremely out of place.... this addition would've been a welcome bit of diversity to this novel had it been utilized or developed correctly. Though Kamilah has built an amazing world and does an absolute fantastic job on descriptions... I'm sorry to say that An Arcane Inheritance fell rather short for me despite the author's creativity and some redeeming points in the story... but I will not be continuing this series if there is another to come.
