Two young women.
Both heirs to two entirely different hereditary burdens.
And yet both bound by the same threat looming over their village.
Gabrielle is the first woman to carry the mantle of Hunter, with the obligation and sworn duty of slaying the faery beasts tormenting the Brimmond Wood. With her duties, she holds immense power... power that she has grown wary of.
When she is summoned by someone she once loved, and someone who shattered her...so very long ago...Isabeau... a duke and also a woman... cursed with the fact that she must sleep when she is most needed for her duties...she must turn to the Hunter in an attempt to solve her predicaments...
Against all odds, Gabrielle finds herself once more falling for the woman that broke her so long ago... and yet as they bond and grow together to solve Isabeau's predicament... new danger looms from within the Wood....
When I first started this novel, I have to admit that I did not expect the heavy lean towards romance that A Treason of Magic holds within its pages.
There is quite a bit more focus on Isabeau and Gabrielle's relationship, and while the lean towards the more romantical side of things is not ... completely what I was expecting. It's not bad per say, but it does detract alot from the story when one comes in expecting the typical sort of world that romantasies usually take place in. This is a love story of yearning and... somewhat intense lust. For the most part, this is ok to me, and I did find the way Gabrielle and Isabeau interact with each other rather adorable. However, after a bit I found the constant back and forth confessions of love and adoration to kind of begin to detract from the remainder of the story line, and the world and the magic that was explained... which there could've also been a little more explanation over for sure.
Overall, this is still a wonderful, if brief read, and I did find myself already yearning to find out more about the magic, about the world, and about the beast and other possible creepy monsters linger within the woods.
Would I still pick the next book up if there is one? Yes... if anything to find out more about the world and its history.
